What’s common between The Witcher 3, The Last of Us Part II, God of War, and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild? Apart from winning the Game of the Year awards in the years of their release, these games serve as great examples of story-driven games with outstanding character development. These games didn’t just stand out because of their mechanics or visuals—they captivated players with their rich narratives and compelling characters. Narrative-driven games consistently top both critical and commercial success lists, proving that a strong story is often the key to creating games to be remembered.

In this article, we will explore why story and character development are often crucial to a game’s success, and how Pingle Studio helps game developers worldwide excel at crafting these elements. Through years of experience working with dozens of the industry’s major players, we’ve helped build games that not only play well but also tell powerful, enduring stories. Let us show you how the right narrative can elevate your game to the next level.

Why Storytelling Matters in Game Design

What differentiates Mortal Kombat from EA’s UFC games? Both franchises are 1v1 competitive fighting games. We’re not talking about the fantasy abilities of MK or advanced grappling in UFC. Without a deep and well-crafted fantasy lore, MK is not so much different from the UFC.

At its core, a strong story provides more than just a backdrop for gameplay; it gives context, purpose, and emotional depth to the game world. The story ties together the gameplay mechanics, making each mission or stage more meaningful. A well-crafted narrative helps players understand their role, their challenges, and the consequences of their actions within the game. In essence, a story gives players a reason to care, transforming a game from a series of objectives into an emotionally engaging journey.

For example, in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Geralt’s quest to find Ciri isn’t just a task on a list—it’s deeply personal, tied to his past and his relationships, and based on the literature source. This connection gives weight to the player’s actions, making them feel invested not only in the outcome of the quest but also in the emotional stakes of the narrative. Without that story context, even the best gameplay mechanics would feel hollow.

Immersion and Engagement

One of the greatest benefits of strong storytelling is its ability to immerse players in the game world. A compelling narrative makes players forget they’re holding a controller, drawing them into the game’s universe in a way that pure gameplay cannot. The best examples of immersive storytelling make the world feel alive, full of history, culture, and depth.

Games like Red Dead Redemption 2 exemplify this immersion. The sprawling open world of the American frontier is rich with stories—both big and small—that players uncover as they explore. Whether it’s the main plot or the smaller side quests, each story in Red Dead Redemption 2 adds another layer to the game’s universe, making the player feel like they’re living through an authentic narrative.

Emotional Impact

Storytelling in games also has the unique ability to evoke a wide range of emotions. If your game connects the player with the story you want to tell, players might experience empathy, excitement, tension, and even heartbreak. Emotional investment keeps players coming back for more, long after the game is finished.

The Art of Character Development

Character development is creating multi-dimensional, evolving characters who grow throughout the game, enriching the narrative and deepening player engagement. Characters that experience change—whether emotionally, physically, or psychologically—allow players to feel invested in their journey. This is known as dynamic character development, where characters evolve in response to events or player decisions. In contrast, static characters remain consistent throughout the game, serving as steady elements around the story. Both types are important in-game narratives, but dynamic characters are typically those with whom players connect most deeply as they reflect the transformative experiences of the game’s plot.

For example, in the latest God of War games, Kratos is no longer the one-dimensional god of vengeance seen in earlier installments. In the Scandinavian-setting games, his character undergoes significant emotional growth as he builds a relationship with his son, Atreus. Also, in the latest games of God of War’s Greek era, Kratos is discovered as a heavily wounded soul who struggles with loss and terrible decisions in the past. This growth adds complexity and depth to the game, turning it into more than just a battle-driven experience—it becomes a story about redemption, fatherhood, and the challenges of letting go of the past.

Building Player Connections

Well-developed characters enable players to form emotional bonds, driving player engagement. The key to these connections lies in crafting characters with rich backstories, clear motivations, and authentic relationships with others in the game world. When characters feel real, players are more likely to care about them, their struggles, and their development.

A character’s backstory provides the foundation for their motivations, revealing why they act the way they do. Characters like Ellie from The Last of Us resonate with players because her backstory and motivations are deeply tied to her emotional journey. Players witness her growth and struggles, making her more relatable and the narrative more compelling. The strength of such relationships within the game’s world can turn characters into beloved icons, as seen with the dynamic duo of Joel and Ellie, whose bond serves as the emotional core of the game.

Interactive Characters in Games

What sets characters in games apart from other forms of media is the ability to interact with them. Unlike movies or books, games give players the power to shape relationships and make decisions that influence character development. This interaction heightens engagement and gives players a sense of agency.

In Mass Effect, for instance, players control Commander Shepard’s interactions with their squad members, shaping the characters’ relationships and, in some cases, their fates. The choices players make throughout the trilogy impact character arcs, ensuring no two experiences are identical. This level of interactivity strengthens the connection between the player and the game’s characters, making their development feel personal and meaningful.

Integrating Story and Gameplay

Narrative-Gameplay Synergy

One of the most important aspects of successful game design is ensuring that the story and gameplay work together seamlessly. A strong narrative should never feel separate from the mechanics; instead, it should be deeply intertwined with the player’s actions and the game world. When story and gameplay are in sync, they enhance each other, creating a more immersive and cohesive experience.

A prime example of narrative-gameplay synergy is Dark Souls, where exploration and discovery are tied directly to the game’s lore. Players aren’t spoon-fed the story through cutscenes or text-heavy dialogue; instead, they uncover it through environmental clues, item descriptions, and interactions with NPCs. The cryptic nature of the game’s narrative invites players to piece together the story as they progress through the gameplay. This method of storytelling encourages exploration and curiosity, rewarding players for engaging deeply with the game world.

Another approach is integrating narrative progression with gameplay mechanics. For example, in Hades, a roguelike game, the narrative evolves with each player death. Rather than resetting the story, the player’s repeated attempts to escape the underworld are acknowledged within the plot, with characters commenting on the player’s progress. This clever integration ensures that the story never feels disconnected from the gameplay loop, making each run feel meaningful.

When story and gameplay are integrated like this, it transforms the way players engage with the game. Rather than simply moving through a series of tasks, they become part of the story itself, with their actions directly influencing the progression of the narrative.

The Role of Choice and Consequence

Player agency is another crucial element in integrating story and gameplay, particularly in role-playing games (RPGs) and open-world titles. Allowing players to make meaningful choices within the game can have a profound impact on the narrative, deepening immersion and personalizing the player’s experience. When players feel that their decisions have real consequences, they become more invested in the story’s outcome.

In games like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, player choices can dramatically alter the course of the story. Throughout the game, Geralt faces moral dilemmas that don’t always have clear right or wrong answers. These decisions not only affect the immediate gameplay but also have long-term consequences, shaping relationships, altering quests, and even determining the game’s ending. By giving players control over key narrative moments, the game allows them to craft a story that feels uniquely their own.

In Mass Effect, player choice plays a similar role. Commander Shepard’s interactions with crew members, moral decisions, and actions during critical moments all have lasting effects on the narrative across multiple games in the series. This level of choice and consequence creates a sense of ownership over the story. Players can shape relationships, decide the fates of important characters, and ultimately influence the outcome of the entire trilogy.

Player agency doesn’t always have to be on a grand scale, either. In many open-world games, smaller choices—such as how the player interacts with NPCs or approaches missions—can affect the world around them. For instance, in Red Dead Redemption 2, the player’s behavior influences how the world reacts. Being honorable or ruthless affects not only how NPCs treat the main character but also shapes the story’s tone and eventual conclusion.

Games provide a more personalized experience by allowing players to shape the narrative through their decisions. This deepens the emotional connection to the story, as players are no longer passive observers but active participants who influence the direction and outcome of the game. When combined with strong character development and world-building, choice and consequence make for a more dynamic and immersive narrative experience.

The Impact of Storytelling and Character Development on Player Retention and Game Success

Player Retention and Narrative Depth

Players who feel emotionally invested in a game’s narrative are more likely to stay engaged for longer periods of time. This emotional investment comes from a narrative that resonates with players, offering them characters and plotlines they care about. Games that excel in storytelling create memorable moments that keep players coming back, whether to uncover new details, explore character relationships, or experience the emotional highs and lows that come with a strong narrative arc.

Story-driven games often excel in player retention because they give players a sense of purpose beyond completing objectives. The emotional connections players form with characters and the intrigue of the plot compel them to see the story through to the end. The Last of Us Part II is one of the prime examples of how a gripping, emotional narrative can drive engagement, with players staying invested in the outcome of Ellie’s journey, despite the emotional intensity of the story.

In contrast, games without a strong narrative may struggle to retain players once the novelty of the mechanics wears off. While mechanics and gameplay loops are critical, it’s often the story that creates lasting memories and deepens player engagement.

Longevity of Story-Driven Games

Story-driven games also tend to have a longer shelf life, as they encourage replayability through branching narratives, multiple endings, or player-driven choices. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, for example, offers numerous story outcomes based on player decisions, making each playthrough a unique experience. The game’s rich narrative encourages players to return to it multiple times, exploring different paths and choices to see how they affect the story and world.

In open-world and RPG games especially, players often return to explore alternate choices, revisit favorite characters, or uncover hidden lore. This extended engagement contributes to the longevity of a game, keeping it relevant long after its initial release. Games with strong, evolving stories also inspire community discussions, fan theories, and modding, further contributing to their lasting appeal.

How working with Pingle Studio helps you build deeper characters and game worlds

As we said in this blog before, one of the key points of the “Why do people play video games” discourse is that it is a matter of having fun. And the vast majority of people enjoy sharing fun with friends or with individuals who share their taste in gaming. That’s why multiplayer gaming isn’t going anywhere, same as multiplayer game developers. Recent successful examples, like Helldivers 2, provide some extra proof of this point.

Being in the industry since 2007, we at Pingle Studio understand what it takes to develop a multiplayer game, even of not the biggest scale. It’s important to understand that a successful multiplayer game is not just about the competitive or cooperative aspects but mostly about fostering social connections. In the post-COVID era, where socialization has taken on new forms, multiplayer games have become increasingly vital as virtual spaces for interaction, collaboration, and community building.

The investment in multiplayer game development by industry giants like Rockstar Games further highlights the sector’s importance and profitability. Rockstar’s commitment to creating expansive multiplayer worlds in titles such as Red Dead Redemption 2 and GTA V involved millions of dollars in investment. And even though they did not do exactly as planned, these titles are still a huge part of Rockstar’s income.

As a company specializing in outsourcing game development, we bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the table, leveraging our experience to create captivating multiplayer games that resonate with players globally. Our portfolio reflects our ability to navigate the complexities of multiplayer game development, from balancing gameplay mechanics to integrating social features that enhance player interaction and retention.

In this article, we will cover the essentials of multiplayer game development in 2024.

What makes people play multiplayer games?

The meteoric rise of multiplayer games has fundamentally reshaped the gaming industry, transforming the way players engage with digital worlds. These games enliven the gaming landscape with robust social interaction, connecting players across continents to share triumphant victories and agonizing defeats. The inherent nature of human competitiveness fuels the fire for these games, providing a competitive challenge that is exhilarating and addictive.

At the heart of their allure lies the opportunity for gamers to build lasting friendships, forge alliances, and engage in epic storylines together. This not only elevates the entertainment value of games but also solidifies a community atmosphere where friendships can span the globe. Whether it’s reaching new heights in a cooperative RPG or securing the winning goal in a frenetic sports simulation, the joy of playing together creates indelible memories and experiences.

Moreover, the seemingly limitless variety offered within diverse genres ensures that players, regardless of their gaming preference, find their niche. From high-octane first-person shooters to strategic turn-based simulations, multiplayer games cater to every imaginable gaming appetite, continually redefining the essence of interactive entertainment.

Key Phases in Multiplayer Game Development

Making a multiplayer game is a step-by-step journey that builds the game from the ground up. It starts with a simple idea and keeps growing even after it’s released, with regular updates.
How cloud technologies change the experience for gamers

However, the main part of the game industry, influenced by the development of cloud gaming technology, are the players. This is how we see developing cloud gaming changing the gamer’s experience:

Accessibility and Affordability:

Cloud gaming decreases the need for high-end gaming hardware, allowing gamers to access high-quality gaming experiences on a variety of devices, including smartphones, tablets, laptops, and smart TVs. This accessibility democratizes gaming, making it more inclusive and affordable for players who may not have the means to invest in gaming consoles or high-end PCs. Additionally, cloud gaming platforms often offer subscription-based services or free-to-play models, providing gamers with access to a vast library of games at an affordable price point.

Flexibility and Convenience:

With cloud gaming, gamers can play their favorite titles anytime, anywhere, without the need for lengthy downloads or installations. Players can seamlessly pick up where they left off at home or on the go and enjoy uninterrupted gaming experiences across different devices. This convenience allows gamers to fit gaming into their busy lifestyles and provides greater flexibility in how and when they play.

Fortnite – one of the biggest cloud gaming-supporting game titles

Expanded Game Library:

Cloud gaming platforms offer gamers access to a diverse and constantly expanding library of games, ranging from blockbuster titles to indie gems. With a subscription-based model or digital storefront, players can discover and explore new games across various genres without the need to purchase individual titles. This vast selection ensures that there is something for everyone, catering to diverse tastes and preferences within the gaming community.

Сloud gaming disadvantages and challenges

The uncentered nature of cloud gaming obviously can’t perform and develop without bringing up some issues. Here are some key challenges and strategies for addressing them:

From hardware things like SSDs, faster processors, or cloud technologies to software solutions like Blueprints and other visual scripting tools, how companies make games changes when it happens. And we’re facing another groundbreaking moment in the industry – using AI in game development.

As a concept, AI is a technology that has been introduced previously for our industry. Content generation technologies are one of the brightest examples of artificial intelligence in games. According to the statistics, the global generative AI in the gaming market will grow dramatically in the coming years.

As experts in the full cycle of game development processes, we at Pingle Studio are thrilled to explore the full potential of AI in game development.
In this article, we will delve into the profound impact of AI on game development, exploring two key areas where its influence has been particularly transformative: procedural content generation and personalized game experiences.

Generative AI in Game Development

One of the most obvious ways to use AI in game development is by creating visual and audible assets. AI algorithms have brought big progress in creating game assets, such as sprites, 3D models, textures, and sound effects. AI offers developers unprecedented opportunities for efficiency, creativity, and scalability in asset creation.
Traditionally, creating game assets requires a labor-intensive process involving skilled artists, designers, and tech professionals. However, with generative AI, developers can leverage the power of machine learning to automate and streamline this process. By training AI models on vast datasets of existing assets, the algorithms can learn patterns, styles, and characteristics, enabling them to generate new assets that match the desired aesthetic and design principles.

Let’s explore some examples of game assets that can be generated using AI:

Sprites.
AI-powered generative models can create diverse and visually appealing sprites for characters, objects, and environmental elements. These models can learn from existing sprites, allowing developers to quickly generate variations or entirely new sprites with different poses, animations, and styles.

3D Models.
AI algorithms can generate intricate 3D models for characters, creatures, props, and environments. By training on existing models, the AI can create new ones that align with specific art styles, proportions, and even unique characteristics.

Textures.
By analyzing patterns and textures from a vast collection of existing assets, generative AI can produce high-quality and diverse textures that can be seamlessly applied to various surfaces in the game world. While some consider the aesthetic and consistency aspect of AI textures questionable, using AI for textures definitely saves a lot of time. At least, you can always let AI create a set of textures and then improve it manually.

Sound Effects.
AI algorithms can be trained on extensive libraries of sound effects to generate new audio assets. From weapon sounds and ambient noises to character voices and music, generative AI can create a vast array of audio assets that enhance the immersive experience of the game.

The potential of generative AI in asset creation is not limited to these examples alone. AI algorithms can also be applied to generate terrain, foliage, user interface elements, level layouts, and much more. Moreover, the iterative nature of AI models enables developers to fine-tune and refine the generated assets based on feedback and preferences, ensuring that the final output meets the desired quality and vision.

Procedural Content Generation

Apart from creating separate assets, AI in game development can also improve procedural content generation pipelines. PCG is a great tool for creating game content dynamically, resulting in limitless and ever-evolving gameplay experiences.

Generative AI algorithms are capable of generating vast and intricately detailed game content autonomously. By leveraging machine learning and pattern recognition, these algorithms can analyze existing content and generate new, unique variations on the fly. Apart from saving time, PCG with AI introduces a new level of dynamism in gaming.

Let’s explore some of the ways generative AI can be used for procedural content generation:

World and Level Generation
Generative AI can create expansive and immersive game worlds by generating landscapes, terrains, structures, and vegetation. These algorithms can analyze various parameters and constraints, such as terrain height, climate, and biome distribution, to generate realistic and visually stunning environments. Additionally, AI can dynamically create levels, determining the placement of obstacles, enemies, treasures, and other interactive elements, ensuring each playthrough feels unique.

Quests and Missions
AI algorithms can generate quests and missions dynamically, offering players a seemingly infinite number of engaging challenges. By analyzing player progress, character attributes, and game world parameters, generative AI can create quests tailored to the player’s abilities and preferences. This approach ensures a personalized and continuously evolving gameplay experience. And imagine how helpful it can be in creating daily activities in online games like the Call of Duty franchise.

Narrative Generation
AI-powered generative models can assist in crafting compelling narratives for games. By learning from existing story structures, character arcs, and dialogue patterns, AI algorithms can generate branching storylines, diverse character interactions, and immersive dialogues. This capability allows for non-linear storytelling and a greater sense of player agency within the game’s narrative.

Asset and Prop Generation
In conjunction with generative AI for asset creation, procedural content generation can create an abundance of unique and visually captivating objects, props, and items within the game world. By dynamically generating and placing assets based on specific rules and constraints, developers can populate their games with a wide variety of interactable elements, enhancing immersion and replayability.

PCG is a pretty widespread approach in game development, and AI makes it stronger. However, it’s far from perfect. Generated content may lack the human touch and handcrafted feel. Balancing and fine-tuning generated content can be challenging. Additionally, generating high-quality assets that match specific artistic styles can be difficult. Despite these drawbacks, the potential for creativity, efficiency, and scalability makes PCG a valuable tool in game development.

Personalized Game Experience

Delivering a personalized game experience has always been a coveted goal in our industry, and yet again, it might be one of the great examples of artificial intelligence in games. AI can help developers to analyze player behavior, preferences, and skill level and dynamically adjust the game mechanics to create a truly personalized gameplay journey.
AI algorithms can process vast amounts of player data, extracting valuable insights that enable developers to tailor the game experience on an individual level. By analyzing gameplay patterns, decision-making, and player interactions, AI can make real-time adjustments to various aspects of the game.

Here are some ways in which AI can create a personalized game experience:

Difficulty Level Adjustment
AI algorithms can monitor a player’s performance and adapt the difficulty level accordingly. If a player is struggling, the AI can reduce the challenge by adjusting enemy behavior, altering the environment, or providing additional hints or assistance. Conversely, for more experienced players seeking a greater challenge, the AI can ramp up the difficulty by introducing new obstacles, increasing enemy aggression, or limiting available resources. Just imagine the dynamic difficulty in soul-like games!

Adaptive Gameplay
AI algorithms can analyze a player’s playstyle and adapt the gameplay mechanics accordingly. For example, if a player prefers stealthy approaches, the AI can provide more opportunities for stealth-based encounters or reward stealthy actions with additional benefits.

Content Recommendations
AI can learn the player’s preferences and past gaming experiences to recommend relevant content within the game. Suggesting specific quests, side missions, or unlocking hidden areas based on the player’s interests, AI can provide a personalized and curated gameplay experience, keeping players engaged and immersed.

Dynamic Narrative Choices
AI algorithms can evaluate a player’s decisions and actions within the game’s narrative and dynamically alter the story path accordingly. By adapting the narrative to align with the player’s choices, AI ensures a personalized storytelling experience that resonates with each player’s unique motivations and desires. One of the successful examples of this is how Mount & Blade II mod uses ChatGPT to procedurally generate dialogue.

Conclusion

We have yet to discover the full potential and full risks of using AI in gaming. While AI content generation presents advantages, there are considerations to address, such as maintaining the human touch and achieving specific artistic styles. However, the potential of AI in game development cannot be overstated. It empowers developers to create expansive, immersive, and personalized game experiences that captivate players and keep them engaged for hours on end.

As AI technology continues to advance, the future of game development holds even greater potential for innovation and creative expression. The combination of AI content generation, PCG, and personalized experiences will redefine the boundaries of player immersion, creativity, and engagement.

One of the key elements in the successful game development process is a development environment, which allows a wide specter of work to be done in the project. Unreal Engine by Epic Games is a great example of this kind of technology. As an Unreal engine game Development studio, we have worked with this environment since 2007, and it only gets better with every next generation.

It’s been more than a year since the release of Unreal Engine 5. We are happy to already gain experience with projects that use the latest version of Unreal Engine. In this article, we will talk about Unreal Engine 5 as a development environment and share our experience of working on the projects which use it.

What is Unreal Engine 5?

Unreal Engine is a universal game development environment, based on C++ programming language. Developed by Epic Games, Unreal Engine offers a robust framework and a suite of integrated tools that enable game developers to build games for various platforms, including PC, consoles, mobile devices, and virtual reality.

Unreal Engine 5 benefits

Every next generation of Unreal Engine offers a set of new development tools, that usually become a development standard for the lifetime of the engine’s generation. In the case of Unreal Engine 5, Epic Games cared to provide some very progressive and demanded next-generation development features. To name a few:

Nanite. Unreal Engine 5 introduces Nanite, a groundbreaking virtualized micropolygon geometry system. Nanite enables developers to import film-quality source art comprising hundreds of millions or billions of polygons directly into the engine, without the time-consuming and manual optimization. This technology allows for incredibly detailed and realistic environments, pushing the boundaries of visual fidelity.

Lumen. Lumen Global Illumination: Lumen is a fully dynamic global illumination solution in Unreal Engine 5. It offers real-time lighting and global illumination that react dynamically to changes in the scene. With Lumen, developers can achieve realistic lighting and accurate shadowing, even in large open worlds. It simplifies the lighting process, allowing for more creative freedom and efficient iteration.

Enhanced Animation System. Unreal Engine 5 introduces a new animation system called Control Rig, which empowers developers to create more immersive and dynamic character animations. Control Rig offers a flexible and intuitive toolset for authoring procedural animations and real-time control of character movements. This feature streamlines the animation pipeline and enables developers to create realistic and responsive characters with ease.

Collaborative Development Tools. Unreal Engine 5 enhances collaboration among team members with new and improved collaborative tools. Live Link Face enables real-time facial animation capture, allowing developers to quickly capture and animate realistic facial expressions. Additionally, Multi-User Editing facilitates simultaneous collaborative editing, enabling multiple team members to work together on the same project, accelerating the development process, and fostering better teamwork.

These benefits collectively make Unreal Engine 5 a powerful and versatile tool for game developers, enabling them to create visually stunning, highly immersive, and optimized gaming experiences across multiple platforms.

New features of Unreal Engine 5

Previous versions of Unreal Engine have already provided developers with some industry-standard development tools, like Blueprints Visual Scripting, Scalable Foliage, Take Recorder, and Forward Rendering. Adding to those mentioned above, Unreal Engine 5.2, released in May 2023, offers some more options to empower your game development:

Procedural Content Generation framework. Procedural Level Generation is a booming technology in games now, so Unreal Engine offers an early look at a toolset that will make it easier to include this feature in your game. This tool allows developers to define the generated content’s settings, rules, and parameters on a large scene inside Unreal Engine. Both in-editor tools and runtime components are included in the framework. Currently, the Procedural Content Generation framework is an experimental technology, but it already shows some perspective results, so we’re looking forward to further editions.

Substrate. Substrate is an empowering to the materials authoring functionality. It gives the developer more management abilities for the look and feel of the in-game objects. Substrate helps imagine states and other visible parameters of the objects inside Unreal Engine 5, like rust, dirt, being wet, being on fire, and many more.

Updates for the virtual production toolset. This update for the existing functionalities provides filmmakers with a wider set of features for creative control over cutscenes and other kinds of video products. The touch-based interface makes it easy to use on a mobile device – you can set lights, color gradings, and other visible parameters right from the settings window in the Unreal Engine. Also, with Unreal Engine 5.2, performing various pre-production tasks, like operating multiple virtual cameras or program camera moves is much easier.

Updated ML Deformer. Unreal Engine 5 uses machine learning technology heavily, allowing developers to create high-quality game characters in real-time. ML Deformer ads many more options for generating characters’ stances, body languages, states of bodies, and many other deformations for muscle, flesh, and cloth.

Unreal Engine 4 vs 5. Main differences

Unreal Engine 4 has served us well since 2014, and even now, after a year of the active presence of Unreal Engine 5 on the market, we still see many games released using the previous version. Unreal Engine 4 is a decent tool, well-known by thousands of developers worldwide, so many companies do not hurry to update their games to the fifth version.

But there are many features inside Unreal Engine 5, that can’t be done on the fourth version with the same quality. To name a few:

API. Despite some issues at the start, Unreal Engine 5 already provides the fine-tuned API, that makes it easier to work with other tools on your Unreal Engine project. Also, migrating your game from Unreal Engine 4.24-4.27 to Unreal Engine 5 is pretty smooth.

Dynamic Light System. It would take weeks to make a scene with a comparable complexity level of the dynamics lights in Unreal Engine 4, which would only take days with Lumen and Nanite in Unreal Engine 5. Working with light is much faster and more smooth in Unreal Engine 5. But, of course, it requires more hardware power, and the files would weigh way more in Unreal Engine 5.

UI. The Unreal Engine 4 interface felt a little retro for some time already. Unreal Engine 5 offers a modern-looking and much more intuitive interface inside the Unreal Editor. Things like Create Tab and updated plugins support help developers feel less loaded in Unreal Engine 5. Also, Unreal Engine 5 can run UE4 projects in the updated interface, making the transition easier.

Why choose Pingle for unreal engine game development?

We at Pingle have used and loved Unreal Engine since our first days in the industry. We work in Unreal Engine since Unreal Engine 3 in 2007, when Stranglehold and BioShock were considered the latest AAA-gaming masterpieces.
As of this day, we can’t share the results of our work with Unreal Engine 5 due to NDA restrictions. But we will gladly share some of our success with previous versions of the engine:

Life is Strange – we’re honored to bring this storytelling diamond to mobile devices, which required a UE3-UE4 porting and some creative approach to optimization.

Insurgency: Sandstorm – we use all the power of Unreal Engine 4 to develop levels, game balance, updates, and optimization for this huge multiplatform online FPS.

The Eternal Cylinder – our creative game design team used many hidden-gem Unreal Engine 4 techniques to make this game feel next-gen, with special features of the new gamepads and a very smooth game flow.

Five Nights At Freddy’s: Security Breach – this game is a great example of how Unreal Engine’s optimizing tools and the creative approach of experienced developers can fit such a deep game inside the very limited hardware capabilities of the Nintendo Switch platform.

So, if you consider developing your game with Unreal Engine 5, make sure to drop us a line, if you have any need for additional development and creative power.

People play games all around the world more or less equally. The genres, platforms, and some game metrics may vary, but there are huge gaming communities more or less in every part of the globe. According to Imarc group research, the gaming market grew to US$ 202.7 Billion in 2022. And this growth didn’t happen in a single region.

With that being said, the importance of adapting games for regional languages and cultural peculiarities can’t be underestimated. If your game features at least some text, you’d better localize it for as many languages as you can. But it’s not an easy process, even for games with a little text. In this article, we will dive deep into the video game localization process, how long does video game localization take, try to figure out what is game localization for your particular game, and take a look at some of the best practices for game localization.

What is game localization

Game localization is the process of adapting video games for different regions and cultures by translating, modifying, and adapting content such as text, audio, and graphics.

The video game localization process involves many different aspects, like translating the game’s dialogues, UI texts, and surrounding speeches, adapting graphics and art to fit the new market, and sometimes even modifying gameplay elements to suit the region better. Overall, the goal is to make the game feel as though it were developed specifically for that region or culture.

Why is game localization important?

It’s important to understand that the best practices for game localization are often bigger than just translating the text in the game. So, here are 5 reasons why localization is important.

Market expansion and revenue growth

Proper localization helps games reach a wider audience by making them accessible to speakers of various languages. And by expanding market reach with new gamers, localization can lead to increased sales and revenue.

Providing better experience

Games that are localized with decent quality are more engaging and immersive due to the fact that players can fully understand and relate to the content with no extra effort. Sometimes it changes the whole perspective of consuming the game. Take the example of Red Dead Redemption 2. If Rockstar cared to voice dialogues in more languages, non-English speaking players would pay more attention to the beauty of the world they developed instead of trying to catch on to the small-fronted subtitles.

Avoiding law-related issues

Various regions may have very different opinions about some things your game may feature, like violence, using some symbols, mentioning religious figures, etc. For example, Australia has pretty strict laws about reflecting violence in video games, so if companies want to reach the Australian gaming audience, which is 17+ million people, they have to censor the violence, which would be a part of localization.

Building brand loyalty

Gamers appreciate when games are localized for their region, which can lead to increased brand loyalty and positive reviews. A decent part of positive reviews on Steam include gratitude for localizing games for various languages.

Meeting cultural expectations

Localization allows games to be tailored to local cultures, which ensures that game content is appropriate and acceptable in different regions. For example, in order to maintain selling Wolfenstein: The New Order in Germany, Machine Games managed to change the nazi swastika symbol to another emblem in the German version of their game. Otherwise, the game would be banned, and Bethesda would have lost more than 32 000 sales in Germany.

Challenges in game localization

Making even a simple game fit many regions properly is not a walk in the park in most cases. Here are the 5 most common challenges publishers and game companies face while localizing games.

Challenge 1: Language barriers

Ensuring that the game is accurately translated into the target language can be challenging, particularly when dealing with idiomatic expressions, slang, or humor that may not translate well. We highly recommend involving people with philological and translational degrees and experience in your game localization process.

Challenge 2: Cultural differences

Adapting game content to suit local cultural norms and sensitivities requires careful consideration, as what is acceptable in one region may not be in another. If you have doubts about whether something from your game affects the representatives of some culture – make sure to find a consultant for this region.

Challenge 3: Technical issues

Text expansion and font compatibility can cause layout and spacing problems: Asian hieroglyphs take significantly less place than English words, while German may take much more. Also, make sure the game’s engine supports the special symbols that may occur in the language.

Speaking of audio and video, the files may require reformatting for different regions. And also, many games suffer from poor lipsync while voicing games.

Challenge 4: Time and cost constraints

Localization can be time-consuming and costly, particularly for larger games with extensive content. Development companies must balance the costs of localization against the potential revenue.

Challenge 5: Legal and regulatory requirements

Different regions may have different legal and regulatory requirements that must be met, such as age ratings, content restrictions, and licensing agreements. Make sure to consult lawyers for regions you want to localize your game to.

How to localize your game? A detailed algorithm

OK, you’ve defined a list of languages and a set of regional laws and other details you should take into account during your video game localization process. But how exactly should you do it? What is game localization for your exact game?
Well, it depends. But here’s the formula that’s very likely not to fail you.
These are the stages you’ll almost definitely face during the video game localization process:

Familiarization

Glossary and Style Guide Creation

Translation

Voice-Over Production

Linguistic Quality Assurance

Master Up and Sign Off

Familiarization

The number one mistake of a lazy localizer is translating the bare text, with no bothering about the context. You should NOT translate the game without playing through it and you should NOT ignore its atmosphere and creative ideas behind it. Please, take your time and go through the game, see the context behind its mechanics and storytelling, and only then start adapting it for other audiences.

Glossary and Style Guide Creation

No matter the chosen style of your game, its atmosphere is very likely to be influenced by the way you localize your game’s key points. Losing some context and key meanings is so easy when you put too little effort into the video game localization process.

Make sure to put an effort into adapting at least the key parts of your game: mechanics, key gameplay moments, and the terms that are important for the correct understanding of your game’s purpose.

Creating a glossary with the set of the key moments of your game may save you a lot of effort while localizing your game. Also, make sure your localization efforts follow the style guide. It’s too easy to ruin the atmosphere of the game due to a lack of attention to the chosen stylistics.

Translation

Obviously, high-quality translation is essential in any kind of localization. We also recommend involving native-speaking editors and proofreaders or at least the ones with corresponding education for a certain region. Cross-checking between translators is also a great and useful thing to do for maintaining the high quality of text localization.

Voice-Over Production

There are three key elements to a successful voicing for your game:

The translation. No matter how great of a voice actor you hire for your game, they will definitely sound dumb and irrelevant if you put a little effort into the source text translation;

The voice. No matter how well you adapt your game’s text to the atmosphere of your game, the wrong voice picking can ruin it all. Imagine Geralt sounding like Steve Buscemi or Ellie sounding like Greta Thurnderg. See, it ruins the whole effort and atmosphere.

The lipsync. So many great gaming moments were completely destroyed by the improper lipsync, even with the best adapting and voice work. Make sure the characters of your game at least don’t speak with their mouth shut, or their mimics aren’t stable when they speak.

Linguistic and Regional Quality Assurance

With all due respect to your language skills and the effort you put into making your game feel better for the international audience, doing great localization often requires something more than that.

The audiences of other languages may have so many great and beautiful things about their language or culture you have no idea about. It’s not your fault – you can’t be a part of every culture on our planet. But if you’re up to bringing your game to the audiences of other countries, nations, or cultures, paying extra attention to details regarding how they see the world has the potential to bring their expressions of your game even better.

Master Up and Sign Off

Here’s when you put extra effort into the details. Law and cultural issues, accents, font parameters, regional stuff – any o it can both ruin or bring your game higher than heaven. Paying poor attention here might get your game into either a bad impression by some regions, or law-related problems you surely want to avoid. If you’re bothering to localize your game to some extra market, make sure to put some effort into polishing it.

The impact of game localization

When considering buying a game, it’s often the first question players bother to ask: does it support the language I speak? From a gamer’s perspective, playing the game in your language makes the first steps much easier. Help them with the first steps, and the chance they drop it will be lower.

Also, imagine playing more complex games, like hardcore RPGs or economic strategies, without fully understanding the language of the game. How much harder is it to enjoy a game, and how much higher are the chances of your player giving up on your game? Help them stay with your game and introduce it to more people – localize your game.

In case you need development, creative, or quality assurance support with your multi-language game – make sure to consider Pingle Studio as your development partner. Contact us, and let’s see how we can make your game attractive for more players!

Breaking into the game development industry has been a hot topic and a desirable career choice for quite some time now, with countless new recruits sharpening their skills every day to varying levels of success, and many training academies accepting applications year-round.

If you’re looking to find a game development team, hire game developers or even if you are a game dev for hire, you’ve probably asked yourself what makes a perfect game development team.

A game is like a difficult cake in a lot of ways. Beginning at the base, which in a game would be the coding and engine, every layer that is added on top adds to the complexity and quality of the cake, stacking up and rounding it out until it is finally ready to serve.

With the metaphor of a cake in mind, we all know how hard it is to overlook one bad flavor in the mix, and how much an improperly prepared layer can ruin the entire experience. Thus, in almost the exact same way, the slightest downfall of one particular part of a game can lead to an irreparable image for the rest of the project.

Unfortunately, this is quite a common phenomenon in the industry, and has left plenty of good, sound work unappreciated due to the failure of an entirely different part of the game development team structure.

With that said, it becomes even more clear just how important it is to invest into pre-production planning and building a competent team. After all, a game development team doesn’t just need to get something done, it also needs to work together well with all other parts.

So what does one need to invest in when looking to hire a game development team, and what should any game dev for hire focus on training themselves in for a successful career? Let’s find out:

Key Components of a Game Development Team

Every game development company is built differently and invests into different sections of its team separately, but there are a few staples in the industry that are certain necessities every time. Not every member of a team needs to possess every skill necessary, but a wide and deeply invested team is the most important ingredient of all when it comes to building a successful game.

Read below to find a few examples of what employers looking to hire game developers should look out for, and the most common categories within game development team structure.

Game Developers

While most modern games either build upon or adapt an existing game engine, there still needs to be a significant amount of knowledgeable manpower present to ensure that your game fits well with the platform it is running upon. This can include preparing everything for playtesting, compiling the fragments provided by other divisions into something that actually resembles a finished product, and ensuring that everything can work together. This is an integral part to focus on when looking to hire game developers.

Neglecting to do so can result in a game that doesn’t run as well as it could, experiences issues upon release, and can even make the entire development process harder from the start.

Concept Artists

3d Modelers cannot take ideas in writing and turn them into lifelike representations of fictional characters without references. Concept art has been a backbone of both animation and game development for as long as either industry has existed, giving one extra step of refinement and polishing before things move onto a level that can actually be implemented into the game.

Neglecting to invest into rounding out your models and characters with concept art can result in the modelling team having a much harder time and producing lower quality meshes, as well as a more inconsistent finished product than if the team were presented the opportunity to make sure that the theme of the game works together as one.

3D Modelling Developers

If you’ve ever wondered who takes the concept art or ideas and makes them into real-life-esque 3D objects, the answer is modelers. And lots of them. A game without models is a flat, lifeless folder of image files, and progressing any further than that is challenging if not impossible. Even 2D games have models to register the borders between objects, but nothing is more important to a 3D game than quality objects, especially when you start bringing in advanced lighting and cloth effects.

Without a modelling division, your team has no structure, and your game has no bones.

Level Designers

So you have models, a story, and an engine. But how do all those things come together and tell the tale that you’re looking to have them tell? All games – be they 2D or 3D – require a massive amount of level design, and it is a directly contributing factor to the end quality of your game. After all – the ‘levels’ form up the world that your players will be seeing, and what will there be for them to appreciate if the levels are hard to navigate and poorly thrown together?

Neglecting to ensure that your level design team is functioning well and has the needs of the player in mind can result in bugs and glitches at the very minimum, and more importantly overall player boredom and dissatisfaction.

UI Designers

Above we dubbed Level Design as the most important element when it comes to developing the lens that your players will be experiencing your game through, but there is just one more factor to that statement that needs adding. UI – or User Interface – includes the buttons, controls, and menus that your players see between and during their interactions with your game. It’s as important as it sounds to invest time not just into developing but also testing your UI for all elements of the game, as even the smallest errors can have the biggest negative impact later down the line.

A bad UI can leave your game looking cheap and underdeveloped, or even leave your players confused or turned off from trying your game out whatsoever.

Audio Engineers

What would a game be without audio? We’re not just talking sound effects and UI elements – music and ambience are also included in this category. It is a bit difficult to define how exactly to go about making music or deciding which music to use in your game, but there is no denying that it is an absolute necessity if you want to produce a successful game.

Music and audio have been significantly influential on players for about as long as games have had them – providing a memorable experience, a higher degree of realism, and a level of recognizability that only sound can achieve.

What do you need in a Game Development Team?

A small independent game company can range in size from one solo developer to a team of under ten, and the game development team size of a large multimedia company can number in the tens of thousands, but the most common game development team size – medium – consists of a couple hundred.

Not only do you require a strong leadership backbone to keep your team working well and cooperating with one another, but you should also ensure that you have invested into all possible aspects of your game’s development, and that your game development team size is fitted to your needs.

Looking to hire game developers isn’t always easy, however, so read on to see how you can find the perfect match for you:

How to Find a Game Development Team?

Having good standards in looking to hire a game development team is a great step in the right direction, but how does one go about actually doing it?

Unless you have an existing firm with thousands of employees – and then, even so – the most popular and efficient method of getting your game polished and having it done well is by using game development outsourcing services such as those provided by Pingle.

Looking to perfect your game development team structure can be even harder than it seems when trying to do it yourself, but with an outsourcing firm, it is simple, reliable, and provides excellent results.

When outsourcing to fill gaps and complete the holes in your game development team you ensure that the job gets done right the first time, and that you have the necessary experience on your side.

Developing a game comes with a lot of hurdles, none bigger than deciding on a development game engine to use. Unity game development provides you with an arsenal of tools and assets to begin producing a game title quickly and of a high standard, but there is a multitude of benefits that come with using Unity for game development that this article will discuss in great detail to give you a better understanding of the platform.

There are thousands of studios using Unity for game development, but why? The simple answer is not only the quantity and quality of the resources it provides but the platform itself integrates easily with other software and provides a high level of accessibility for developers of all skill levels and experience. Let us go into some more detail about why you should consider Unity game development.

Unity – The Rundown

Unity provides a high standard of game creation capable of AAA visuals, high-quality audio, and essentially smooth gameplay. With an extensive list of tools for development in both a 2D and a 3D setting, Unity game development provides you as a developer the benefits of Unity, including but not limited to:

Simple workflows that provide developers the tools to build scenes and customize the editor to suit them better A built-in and dynamic animation system that is capable of producing custom and natural animations in relatively short time frames compared to other suites

Simple multi-platform support that allows you to deploy your game title across all platforms, meaning mobile game development with Unity is a breeze

A giant selection of pre-built assets on the marketplace, which means whether you’re doing mobile game development with Unity or perhaps just Unity 3D Game development for PC, you’re able to source assets required to get your game off the ground, filling in any gaps in your production team skill sets.

Incredibly user-friendly, Unity’s layout is customizable, meaning even at an entry-level you’re able to find your way around its tools and mechanics comfortably and for those who are more familiar with Unity game development, you can customize the layout to suit your particular development pipeline processes.

Endless Compatibility

Unity Game development gives you the advantage of programming in C# as the main language and the benefit of that is it is a relatively low entry point and somewhat easy to grasp for even a beginner programmer. The learning curve for such a language is relatively smooth compared to other languages, which means you’ll be regularly encouraged to learn and improve further. Unity game development is designed with compatibility in mind, not just with other software and runtimes, but with people too.

See it to believe it

Unity 3D game development, in particular, is incredibly robust in its ability to assist even low-level programmers to achieve great results. The introduction of Visual Scripting allows users to create scripts without writing code in what is a node-based network. You can create outcomes linking up nodes and whilst this doesn’t provide the same level of customization and performance that standard coding does, it does allow you to develop your skills and understand the pipeline better.

Any way you want it

It is not just a Unity 3D game development agency that can benefit from the use of the platform for production, but Unity is capable of producing 2D games as well, in fact, it is the most used development tool for 2D mobile platform titles as it provides a robust ability to allow you to port to other game stores and platforms.

Unity on the move

Unity’s cross-platform development capabilities make it perfect for mobile and Android game production, as it lets you easily publish your content. The engine’s agility is definitely one of the benefits of Unity which got it to the current popularity.

Stunning Visuals

Unity offers a vigorous rendering solution, especially with its more modern approach to SRP. It delivers modularity and customization, which results in a better performance overall. The render loop customization is produced through C# script and provides two options for implementation. URP and HDRP.

URP is designed for high performance, which allows a game to function on any device, this is generally what most modern titles will use. The other is HDRP, which is aimed specifically at high-performance devices, This provides extensive visuals that frankly are breathtaking and quickly becoming sought after in the industry.

It is worth noting that custom rendering pipelines with Unity are absolutely possible, which means depending on your experience with scripting, you can create a rendering function more suited to your particular development process.

The Sky is not the Limit

Apart from its robust inbuilt tools and customizable options, Unity is known for its Asset store and package manager. The asset store is a platform where developers from all over the globe can provide their own assets to you for use. Some are premium and require purchase, others are free of cost. All assets can be customized and edited upon putting into your project, which means you have an endless collection of assets at your fingertips, which is great for smaller teams of developers that may not have accomplished modellers.

Package manager, on the other hand, is an efficient way to plugin packages into your Unity project without the burden of having to copy in those plugins and libraries. This means developers can integrate with libraries on platforms like GitHub with ease. Essentially it’s a clean and fast way to integrate plugins without affecting performance.

Entry Point

Entry into Unity’s platform is free – in the industry these days, that statement seems surprising as most software comes with a cost. But Unity, at least the free version, allows new developers to come in and experience what it has to offer and develop their skills further. The pro version, designed for actual development and publishing, is far more robust, but the free option at least provides users with a great starting point that can get the creative and technical juices flowing. In any case, you’d better explore the general functions of the engine before you decide between Unity personal vs pro.

The Cons of Unity Game Development

Whilst Unity provides content that other platforms don’t, there are some flaws and notches in the armour of its reputation that are worth noting, especially for newer developers.

Unlike something like Unreal Engine, Unity does not come with templates for projects, meaning you have to start from scratch for anything your produce. In terms of licenses, Unity is free however there is a paid monthly subscription that provides you with far more tools and resources for your development process and we think, is well worth the $15 a month it requires.

A big issue you’ll hear regularly, especially if you surf game development forums is Memory. Unity has memory-related issues, and by that, we mean Unity content requires far more memory to run and develop with, which for those on lower-end systems, you may struggle when the project becomes complex.

Not only that but there are also no external code libraries, requiring you to produce more code yourself compared to other development platforms. Unity’s backend is still supported using Mono, which is considerably powerful and yet flawed as it tends to lead to slow support and updates.

Unity 2023 Updated Pricing Model

On September 12, 2023, Unity announced a big update to the Unity pricing model.
The company introduced a new commission for developers. The size of the commission will depend directly on the number of game installations. The commission will come into effect on January 1, 2024.

The new Uniy pricing model doesn’t apply to all categories of developers. The conditions for those developers who used free subscriptions will change: Unity plans to apply the $0,20 fee per every install. It applies to the games with 200,000+ installs and $200,000+ revenue.

Those who used Pro and Enterprise Unity pricing models will face a smaller commission after 1 million downloads and $1+ million in revenue.

The new Unity pricing model will not apply to demo versions of games but will apply to early-access games. The charity games will also be free from commissions.

It’s also still to be decided how the new Unity pricing model will work with the subscription services like Xbox Game Pass, PC Game Pass, PS Plus and others.
